major project: psychology
As the only Game Art Student in my course as well as a female moving towards the pathway of becoming a game art designer is odd. Games are mainly targeted towards males which as you are able to see on the market currently, a higher percentage chance of the game that you see available currently are all aimed at men. If there were to be any female targeted video games, it would be a stereotypical and sexist games genre such as fashion, looking and daily lifestyle games, which I believe it makes it extremely unfair towards the female gender being restricted by the way society would look at them.
September last year, our high school (IB) had assigned us each to create a major personal project of a total duration of 9 months to create and complete. At that time, I had started up the idea of creating a psychology game about identities, disorder as well as emotions, one of the key things a human would experience. The project was later officially named as The Ashley's Paradox Project. I had created 7 different characters, 5 protagonists, a reoccurring character as well as an antagonist. As what I wanted was the characters to revolve around a topic and extend the game playtime, which is extremely important in a game.
The Ashley's Paradox is linked to one of my favourite CreepyPasta story of all time: The Disappearance of Ashley, Kansas, perfectly written by the one and only Alex Goodman. The Ashley's Paradox is a story where it takes you back to the legendary CreepyPasta story of The Disappearance of Ashley, Kansas. On August 16, 1952, the town, Ashley, Kansas ceased to exist. You are to join 4 problematic students, Saige Lincoln, Doyle Carter, Edward Dixon and Kathlin Ward, alongside a desperate detective, Harper Siege on a journey to find out the ultimate truth behind the disappearance. In the end, your actions will create an impact towards the characters as well as yourself.
Psychology is not exactly a main topic in the gaming industry currently, as they believe that games are meant to be fun but not to think about it. Psychology isn't just aimed at women, but men too as it is one of the important points to be made in an industry such as game creation and developing.
My major project has been broken down into 3 main parts: Identity, Emotions and Disorder.
Identity
Identity is the most important among the three parts that were mentioned. Identity is more on who and what you are, without it, you won't be able to explain and understand yourself. Identity is what allows us to identify the society.
Ashley's Paradox (AP) Example:
In AP, characters such as Harper Siege and Quinton Collins (reoccurring mentioned character) were taken in by the United States Military as they had lost their status and identity for over 50 years of time period as they wake up in a new world with new identities, both of them would do anything to get their identities back.
Emotions
Emotions is more on thoughts and the way a person feels, it is indeed an important point to be made in a psychology point of view.
Ashley's Paradox (AP) Example:
In AP, the character Doyle Carter is in need to deal with his anger issue despite the fact that he is the top student and popular student in the academy. No matter what, emotions will always take over a person as we are all human beings after all.
Disorder
Disorder can be literally everything from being physically to mentally.
Ashley's Paradox (AP) Example:
In AP, Edward Dixon suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder as he is "haunted" by his older brother William Dixon who died in a car accident a year ago which transferred his heart into the weakened heart of Edward.
See, everyone always have a story to be told about, these might take a long while to be placed into the brain of the society to change their mind, but it will be worth the wait to see how these ideas will be able to change the future.
